Dreams

Timer® Tips Dreams

Today we are talking about dreams, those that we think we should have, those that we want, and those we don’t dare to dream.

TimerDIET

If you have ever dreamt of being a little smaller, a little more fit, or get to the point where food is no longer an issue: I know what it is like to feel like those kind of dreams are just not possible, until one day almost six years ago, I said enough is enough and made a plan to “make it happen” I wasn’t going to take NO for an answer. I knew I could make lasting changes that in the end would get me to my weight loss goals. Now my goals are more of fitness and body muscle. I am in my 50’s and I want to make sure I take care of my body as best I can. I exercise daily and strive to include weight bearing exercises into my routine. I could say that I am too old, it’s not possible, or I could say…every day is another day to make a goal and keep it!! You will feel so much better once you are at your comfort weight!!

TimerORGANIZER

Time is something we all value. Time is money, you have more than likely heard that saying before. In some ways it is more valuable than money. You can always earn more money, but you cannot earn more time. You must be vigilant with your time and be sure not to squander it. Your dreams depend on you accounting for your time in a way that moves you toward your dreams. Do we go through the days dealing with crisis and not tending to the things that could make our dreams come true and minimize the occurrence of crisis? Even if you promised yourself to spend 15 minutes a day working on your dream, do you realize that would be over 90 hours in a year? Try it—schedule 15 minutes each day this week to work on your dream. Figure out what it will take to make it happen!

TimerSAVINGS

This section is dedicated to my step-father who passed away this last week. My mom and he met and married after me and my sisters had all grown up and we had moved out of the house. But, even though he entered our lives much later in life he was very much a part of our family vacations and holidays over the last 30 years. I remember this one vacation/holiday during Christmas in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida when my step-father told my oldest grandson: “Dream big and believe, focus on the yacht and someday it will be yours” My grandson had just mentioned how he would love a yacht someday. It would have been easy to say, ‘oh that will never happen’ or ‘you don’t want a yacht do you?’ But, instead my step-father made my grandson feel his dream had validity and if he really wanted it, it could happen.

When it comes to money be sure to: 1) Spend it on what you need and sometimes on what you want, 2) Save some for peace of mind and the dreams of your future, and 3) Give some to those less fortunate. All of these things need to be done with your money—today! Not tomorrow, not when things get better, not….whatever you are thinking. Do them now and you will feel so much better.

So dream big, make a plan, and make it happen!!

Diet Schmiet

Diet Schmiet

Who wants to go on a diet? No one? I agree! Diets have in them one fatal flaw—there comes a time you need to stop. That is when all the hard work can be undone. The way you eat, needs to be a way of life.

Places to Eat

When you are out and about and hungry do you know the places you will go to get food? When you are hungry is not the time to decide that eating French fries and a double/double cheese burger is not a good idea. Make your menus ahead of time. Know what places have the best options and which of those options you have decided are in your best interest. Almost every restaurant (even fast food) have options that are well-balanced and perhaps by eating only a portion are great choices. The thing is that you cannot guess. You really must go to the website and find out what the nutritional values are.

Eat Well-balanced Meals

Eating well-balanced meals all the time is the easiest way to lose weight and keep the weight off. This means eating approximately the same amount of grams of dietary fat, protein, and carbohydrates. Unfortunately, we do not know what nutrient values food has unless we look them up. We are told, this is bad, this is good, but we don’t really know the nutritional value unless we look them up. Take fruits and vegetables for example. They are considered, good for you. However, fruits and vegetables are primarily carbohydrates, so you must add dietary fat and protein to your fruits and vegetables in order for them to be well-balanced.

How Much to Eat?

That is the question isn’t it? You need to begin to learn to listen to your body and when it starts to feel satisfied. If you feel full, you ate too much. It is a little trial and error at first. Once you get the right feeling you should be able to go anywhere from 2-4 hours without food. If you feel you need to eat sooner than 2 hours then perhaps you did not include enough dietary fat. If you can go longer than 4 hours, perhaps you ate too much dietary fat. If you feel dizzy, you probably had too much in carbohydrates and not enough protein.

Write It Down

Writing down what you ate and when and how you feel is the best way to learn to listen to your body. So go to my website www.timerdiet.com/journal and print out the journals for FREE to track your progress. You will be glad you have the historical information to see how far you have come.
Congratulate yourself along the way. Avoid rewards (they may backfire), but be sure to say to yourself, “Way to go!” when you see some progress.

Discipline vs. Willpower vs. Knowledge

Discipline vs. Willpower vs. Knowledge

I recently got into a discussion with a friend of mine who is also a doctor and the word discipline was used, or the lack of discipline, to describe why we have an epidemic of obesity on our hands today. Then another person said it was lack of willpower. But I personally think it is lack of knowledge.

Discipline Means…

When one is disciplined then one knows certain rules and agrees to obey those rules and risk punishment for not obeying the rules. Which makes sense that my doctor friend chose this particular word. Doctors have a ton of rules that they must live by or suffer severe consequences. So I get it…

Willpower Implies…

Willpower is control over ones impulses. In the usage during our conversation, the lack of willpower would mean that there is little control over ones actions. I think we have a lot of control over our own actions and we willingly do what we do, when we do it, for whatever reason we may or may not give ourselves.

Knowledge is Key…

My first response during our discussion was, “don’t you think people would rather have steak and asparagus if they knew it would be good for them?” Most of our lives we have been told all the foods we ate back in the day (60s & 70s in my case) are bad for you—butter, cheese, red meat, alcohol (ok not until the late 70s for me), and so much more.
We hear to be sure to go for the low fat or reduced fat foods; as if dietary fat were making us fat? I wish there were more words in the English language so we could distinguish between the excess fat on our bodies with the dietary fat that is needed in our bodies.

TimerDiet is knowledge…

There is so much that we hear, read, and watch on TV about what to do or what not to do that it can become sensory overload and we just give up. But, I promise I can make it a whole lot easier if you just give me a chance. Look over the concepts of TimerDiet and see if it something you can get your head around and if so check it out and give it a try. I think you will see the lifestyle change does not require discipline or willpower, because I give you the knowledge you need to make wise choices for you!

4th of July Barbeque

4th of July Barbeque

Barbeques are as much about the 4th of July as are the fireworks! And why not? A barbeque is a great way to feed a lot of people in a short amount of time and have fun while you do it! More than likely whatever is on the barbeque whether it is hot dogs, hamburgers, steak, chicken, or fish is NOT going to get you off track if you are losing or maintaining your weight…it is the other foods at the barbeque!
Happy Birthday America!

If You Are in Charge of the Barbeque

Hosting the barbeque means you have a little more control over the options but you also want to have a lot of the foods that most people are expecting as well. No one wants to go to a barbeque where Kale salad is the only side dish. On page 117 of my book TimerDiet if give you a few ideas such as beans, corn on the cobb, or green beans. Tossed green salad along with the more traditional salads like macaroni and potato makes for a variety for people to choose from.

Bun or NO Bun

I also tell you how to get more of your barbeque foods on your plate and less bun or NO bun! More than likely if you are having a hot dog or hamburger you will want a bun, so what can you do? But the bun in half and then cut the hot dog or hamburger in half and then double it on one half of the bun. Easy way to reduce your bun intake but still enjoy! And your bun to barbeque ratio just got so much tastier!

Barbeque Desserts

The best dessert for a summer barbeque is hands down “Watermelon!” Nothing says a summer barbeque more than watermelon, if you want something a little more rich then make some homemade ice cream! If you want a workout while doing it use the old crank kind, we did as kids and it was actually fun!!!

Pace Yourself

You probably have several hours to enjoy yourself. So don't over do it right away. Pace yourself and allow yourself to go have some fun and then come back if you are still hungry...this is the biggest secret of all...

The One Thing

The One Thing

Daily Exercise
I get asked this question often, “What is the ‘One Thing’ that you need to do to lose weight. I used to dread this question since there isn’t just “One Thing.”  But I know people want to know the gist of what my book is about and I get that.

I used to be vague

I would say it is more about a lifestyle change to which I got a little bit of “I don’t think so” looks. No one really wants to change their lifestyle, especially if they can’t visualize what it will look like.

So then I tried being more specific

I decided to give them the premise in a few short sentences: “Well, you want to eat a well-balanced diet that consists of dietary fat, protein, and carbohydrates at each and every meal so you don’t over eat. And be sure to exercise every day in order to keep your appetite steady. Then I would feel bad that I didn’t tell them to eat eggs for breakfast whenever possible and cheese and crackers before bed if they are hungry and everything else that is in the 250 pages of my book that will help them achieve success. But their eyes were already glazed over with the ‘too much information’ look.

But, then I would think…

Drink plenty of water

Why don’t they just read the book? There are so many diet books out there and I don’t blame someone if they feel oh this is just another book telling me I have to change my entire way of living and eat bean sprouts and wheat grass, stop drinking wine and eating white bread (I don’t have any of those restrictions or ideas in my book, by the way) But, I get it, how do you know for sure? You don’t. Until you read the entire book from beginning to end you won’t know all there is to losing the weight and keeping it off. The mindset and thought process along the way are key in losing weight, yet cannot be explained in coffee banter.
Get plenty of sleep

I hope you try it

Really the only way to explain it is to read it and try it. It will change the way you look at food and exercise and how to enjoy your life. So to those who read the entire book and understand now all that goes into really losing weight on your own terms making your own rules and keeping the weight off once you have figured out your best weight for you—Thank you!

Thank you for believing in me that I would give you great advice that you could use and more importantly want to use.

And to those who are not ready and yet want to know the “One Thing”

So you still want to know the “One Thing” to do to lose weight, I would say this, “be sure to stop eating at the point you are no longer hungry—if you need to eat again because you got hungry again, go for it!” Learn to NOT like the feeling of being full and embrace satisfied. It is all about trial and error and listening to your body.

Bon appétit
